Any object has a Center of Weight (CoW. In dance we use this awareness to maintain Association with our own body, find our own balance point and how momentum or weight will fulcrum.
With out whole body our CoW tends to be around our hips specifically between our tailbone and or belly button favoring the tail bone. This is a little more down and back then most expect. CoW does vary depending on Body Type.
Awareness of the CoW is used in countless aspects of partner dance a few notable of which are: Weight sharing, Pillar of Rotational Energy, Pillar of Initiation and Incorporation, Grounding, Center Line
Dancers often use CoW awareness in more complex terms. For example a part of the body with less association might move according to its own center of weight. Similarly two people who are associated together might develop a Shared Center of weight
Shaping can shift the CoW as objects further from the center have more leverage upon said center.
Through Bowing action the CoW can be shifted even outside the body. This is especially useful in weight sharing motions but can also be stylistic allowing stretch and shaping to shift the body but not increase Leverage or Compression.
